Mary Magaline Horton Parrish December 25th, 1933 – January 11th, 2018
Zebulon - Mary Magaline Horton Parrish, 84, died at her home after a lengthy struggle with illness. She was born to Walter Clyde Horton and Maggie Benson Horton on December 25, 1933. Magaline was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Parrish, who died on August 28, 2015. She also had two brothers (Edgar Horton and Jack Horton) and one sister (Kathleen Underwood) who are all deceased. Magaline is survived by two children: Nathan Parrish (Lisa) of Winston-Salem and Renee Baker (Gregg) of Zebulon. She has three grandchildren: Ruby and William Helms of Zebulon, and Alyra Young of Winston-Salem. Magaline is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who were an important part of her life.
A native of Archer’s Lodge NC in Johnston County, Magaline was also a 1952 graduate of Corinth High School. She married William Parrish on May 30, 1953. In her early years, she worked as a teller at People’s Bank in Zebulon where she also acquired bookkeeping skills that would continue to be useful in her future. Magaline worked alongside William at Parrish Realty for over four decades and provided many forms of needed support. Her work at Parrish Realty brought Magaline into contact with countless people over the years and she deeply valued and cherished the relationships that were formed during this time. Magaline enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, and reading. She was a generous benefactor of numerous charities and non-profits, including The Wildlife Preservation Society, The Wounded Warrior Project, and Easter Seals. Magaline was a kind, caring, compassionate person with a good sense of humor, and a warm smile. But as her senior yearbook suggested, there was “a little mischief in her eye.” She was devoted to her family and provided much needed care and sacrificial support for her parents until their deaths. Magaline loved her grandchildren and took much joy in their lives and accomplishments. She was a faithful member of Zebulon Baptist Church for over fifty years, a devoted member of the Rosella Massey Sunday School Class, and a patron of Peace Haven Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. The family extends its thanks to the community for its support and encouragement in this final season of Magaline's life. Special appreciation is offered to those who were her compassionate and patient caregivers during her last several weeks, months and years.
A funeral service and celebration of Magaline’s life will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Zebulon Baptist Church (400 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC). Internment will follow the service at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon. The Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Zebulon Baptist Church from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
