Wilbur Thurston Debnam,. Sr. March 29th, 1924 - October 3rd, 2013
Wilbur Thurston Debnam Sr. of Zebulon NC passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 3, 2013. Wilbur was devoted to his wife, children, and family. He was born on March 29, 1924 to Mallie Thurston Debnam and Lela Ann Weathersby Debnam. He grew up in Zebulon where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Herndon Horton Debnam, his wife of 69 years. After serving in the 449th Bomb Group and as a Pilot of a B24 bomber in WWII, he returned to Wake County to complete his degree in textiles from North Carolina State University. Wilbur and Dot settled in Zebulon and he and his brother began work in the family business, Debnam Hardware. He worked there until his retirement in 1990. Wilbur was very active in his community and church. He was Mayor of the Town of Zebulon from 1953-1959. As a faithful member of Zebulon Baptist Church, he served as Chairman of the Deacons, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sunday School Superintendent, member of the Finance Committee and member of the Sanctuary Building Committee.
Wilbur is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Dorothy Herndon Horton Debnam, whom he married on December 3, 1943. He is also survived by his son Wilbur Thurston Debnam, Jr and wife Tracy, his daughter Candace Debnam Martin and husband Steve. Grandchildren, Mary Paul Debnam Cantin and husband Tony, Anne Thurston Debnam, Tom Martin and wife Angela, Christian Martin and wife Heather and Parker Leigh Debnam; great-grandchildren, Evan and Lillie Cantin, William and Melina Martin and Franklin Martin; brothers Dwite Debnam and James Debnam and wife Lillie.
He was predeceased in death by his mother Lela Ann Weathersby Debnam, father Mallie Thurston Debnam, stepmother Mary Mitchell Debnam, sisters Elise Debnam Marle and Mary Idaline Debnam and brother Mallie Clifford Debnam.
Funeral will be held on Saturday, October 5. 2013 at Zebulon Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors in the Fellowship Hall from 1:00-2:45pm. Funeral service to follow in the sanctuary at 3:00 pm. Graveside following the service at the Zebulon Town Cemetery.
